What can St. Lazarus Mission do for us?

WHO IS

ST. LAZARUS MISSION

We seek, gather, and care for Christ’s scattered sheep living in nursing homes.  Uniquely, we approach ministry holistically.  We adopt everyone in the nursing home — residents and families, staff and management.  We love anyone and everyone, Christian and non-Christian.  We minister both to and with people, enabling the least of these, the destitute and dying, and the otherwise forgotten and put away, to be the local, missional church in each nursing home where they live with purpose, for the glory of God instead of just waiting to die.

We welcome other branches of Christ’s Church.  Accordingly, we foster parish life including worship, comforting the dying and grieving, visiting the bedridden and sick, fellowship, prayer, Bible learning, pastoral care, special celebrations, friendships, and partaking of the sacraments.  We freely provide time-tested resources and support to help others begin and sustain similar ministries.

What is

OUR VISION

Connecting parish to elderly care in every nursing home, so that together, as Christ’s Body, we may love God and neighbor.

What is

OUR MISSION

We hold out the hands of Christ to love the least, lonely, labeled, and lost — most especially in nursing homes.  Also, we encourage and help other parts of Christ’s Church to do the same.

What are

OUR CORE VALUES

Holistic core values include Personal Relationships, Prayer, Church Services, and the Sacraments, especially Communion and Baptism, as well as ensuring dedicated pastoral care for everyone whose lives are touched by the nursing home.

HOW TO

GET INVOLVED

There are a number ways for you to get involved.  The first step is to pray.  Pray and ask God what he would have you do.  Pray that God will grant you the wisdom to know what He wants you to do and the grace to do it.  Remember, too, that it is wise to talk to your pastor, too.  Every individual’s contribution, whether in prayer, front line ministry, or financial support, matters.

Vital Statistics

  • According to the Pew Research Council, beginning on January 1, 2011, 10,000 Baby Boomers turned 65.  Every day until 2030 at least 10,000 more will be added to that number.

“The need in assisted living communities is both massive and growing.  America’s 16,000 assisted living communities (nursing homes) contain almost a million people.  Shortly, millions more will join them.  4 out of every 5 assisted living community residents did not receive a visitor in the last year.  3 out of 5 will never receive a visitor.  Not one.” (Fr. Chris Herman, The Apostle, 2015, Easter/Pentecost, p. 6)

  • According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2050, the number of people over 85 is expected to triple, growing from 6.3 to 19 million.
